The economic downturn that began in 4th quarter of 2007 has not been unkind to Sleepwell, a brand that has always concentrated on “value” priced bedding products. Indeed, as consumers’ Home values and 401(k) Retirement Savings Accounts declined, Sleepwell’s fortunes rose. Sales in 2008 were up 12% over the previous year, and in 2009, rose an added 2%, in a year that the bedding business suffered double-digit declines.

The name, Sleepwell, remains a very attractive one to all kinds of businesses – from sleep-disorder clinics to investment advisors – and Sleepwell’s trade-mark attorneys are kept busy protecting the name from inappropriate infringement. Nevertheless, the US Patent & Trade-Mark Office does permit use of similar names in dissimilar businesses, so you may see “Sleepwell” or “Sleep Well” or “Sleeping Well” in unrelated places. These are not connected with AW Industries or their Sleepwell bedding products.

Sleepwell remains one of the few bedding brands still offering fully reversible, “two-sided” mattresses. One of the “Big-S” companies launched “no-flip” mattresses in 2000, and many companies large and small have followed their lead. These “no-flip” beds are intended for use on one side only. If you believe you will get better and longer use out of a bed fully upholstered for use on both sides, Sleepwell would be a good choice.
