Here are four things to look for as a side sleeper when shopping for your new mattress.
Studies show that side sleeping is the most popular sleeping position, but side sleepers face a host of mattress-related challenges: sore pressure points, insufficient support, and neck pain, just to name a few. Side sleeping has many purported benefits, but it can be hard to feel them if you wake up with a stiff neck, sore muscles, and back pain. When searching for a new mattress, it can be challenging to identify what exactly you need to get a great night’s sleep as a side sleeper. Here are four things to look for as a side sleeper when shopping for your new mattress.
1. Pick a Soft Mattress
Many side sleepers gravitate towards softer mattresses because of their ability to cushion the hips and shoulders, which can dig into more firm mattresses in an uncomfortable way. Soft mattresses allow the body to sink into the material without lying awkwardly on top of it, which can leave the waist without support. For lighter side sleepers, a softer mattress is especially recommended. Heavier side sleepers may opt for a more firm mattress.
2. … But Not Too Soft
While side sleepers should choose a mattress that allows them to sink in enough that their hips and shoulders are not sore, finding adequate support is vital. If a mattress is too soft, it will not provide enough support for the waist and spine, which can wreak havoc on one’s back and neck. The perfect mattress for a side sleeper should allow the hips and shoulders to sink in while providing adequate spine and lumbar support.
3. Find the Right Material
There are many material options for side sleepers to choose from. A popular option is a hybrid mattress. Some hybrid mattresses contain a mixture of foams, while others use wrapped coils and a foam or pillow topper. Explore all of your material options, but keep in mind that some foam mattresses can sleep hotter than others.
4. Get a Firm Pillow
Every side sleeper has different needs, but many side sleepers have one thing in common: the need for greater head and neck support. While picking a good mattress is vital, finding a quality pillow to go along with that mattress is nearly as important. Many side sleepers opt for firm foam pillows to give their heads the support that they need for a good night’s sleep.
