5 Tips for Better Nights Rest

5 Tips for Better Nights Rest

Sleepwell can help you achieve a better nights rest!

Are you having trouble getting the most out your nightly rest? The sleep we get is supposed to restore our bodies and re-energize our minds for the next day, but tossing and turning, or not getting enough sleep is getting in the way.

Cut Out the Caffeine

Consuming caffeinated beverages too late in the afternoon will negatively impact your ability to rest. It’s not just coffee; check the amount of caffeine in your tea, flavored water, and sodas. These drinks will boost your energy at times when you want your body to relax for the evening. To make a positive impact on the amount of rest you get, cut out caffeinated drinks by 2 p.m. each day. This will give your body plenty of time for the effects of the caffeine to wear off by bedtime.

Change Your Diet

Add more foods to your diet that will help you get more rest at night. Foods like whole-wheat pasta and fresh vegetables will help you get more sleep. On a regular basis, remember to choose foods with plenty protein and tryptophan. You’ll also notice that healthy carbs will also make a difference in the quality of your sleep.

Earlier Nightcap

Many adults find it relaxing to have a glass of wine as they wind down for the evening but drinking your nightcap too late in the evening may cause restlessness in the middle of your sleep cycle. Instead of having your nightcap between the hours of 9pm and 11pm, have a glass a wine at around 6 p.m. with or right after dinner.

Enjoy a Bath

Just like the nightcap, enjoying a hot bath too close to bedtime may cause restlessness because of the rise in your body temperature that it will cause. Take a bath a little earlier in the evening to fully enjoy the relaxing benefits. An earlier bath will give your body temperature some time to cool off so that you can fall comfortably to sleep and stay soundly asleep through the night.

Stretch

Add some gentle, restorative stretching to your evening routine. Choose a simple stretching routine or even start learning more about the benefits of yoga. Stretching helps to balance and steady your breathing and relieve muscle tension without raising your heart rate.
