Buying a mattress can be complicated. There is a lot of strange terminology thrown at you when all you really want is a mattress that won’t break the bank — or your back. One type of mattress that shoppers often hear about is the wrapped coil mattress. What exactly is a wrapped coil mattress, and how can it give you a better night’s sleep? This post will tell you all about what a wrapped coil mattress is, how it works, and why it just might be your best option when shopping for your new mattress.

Coil Design

The first way in which a wrapped coil mattress differs from the traditional innerspring is the coil (or spring) design. In a traditional innerspring mattress, the coils are shaped like an hourglass. They have wider tops and bottoms with a narrow middle. The wrapped coils use coils with a uniform thickness from top to bottom, which eliminates the worry of narrower parts of the coils weakening or breaking over time.

Coil Positioning

Unlike a traditional innerspring mattress, the coils in a wrapped coil mattress are not connected to each other. Traditional innerspring mattresses use a network of coils so that when one coil is pressed down, the surrounding coils must follow. In a wrapped coil mattress, the coils are all wrapped in fabric individually and can move independently of one another. This ability for coils to move independently provides better support while you sleep.

Mattress Performance

Wrapped coil mattresses typically provide better relief for pressure points and better support than traditional innerspring mattresses due to their independent coil design. A wrapped coils can also be the perfect solution for couples. When one partner tosses and turns, the wrapped coils around the fidgeting partner will move and adjust, leaving the sleeping partner still and undisturbed.

Cost

If wrapped coil mattresses are so excellent, they must break the bank, right? Wrong! While all mattresses come in a range of quality and price, a wrapped coil mattress will not set you back much more than a traditional innerspring mattress of a similar price point. Many buyers find the difference in sleep quality to be well worth the small bump in price.
