Demystifying the Difference Between Double, Queen, and Full Mattress Sizes

Can you use queen sheets on a full mattress? Which mattress size is the biggest? We explore these questions and more in this week’s blog.

Choosing a new bed (or buying linens for your current one) can present more of a hassle than is necessary. Double, queen, and full mattresses are very similar in size — so similar, in fact, that many consumers do not know the difference. Can you use queen sheets on a full mattress? Which mattress size is the biggest? We explore these questions and more in this week’s blog.

Crunching the Numbers for Double, Queen, and Full Mattress Sizes

Many people struggle to remember the differences between double, queen, and full mattresses. As far as mattress sizes go, they are fairly similar. Double and full mattresses are one and the same, measuring 54 inches wide and 75 inches tall. Queen mattresses, on the other hand, are slightly larger at 60 inches by 80 inches. Queen beds are often considered the standard for couples, while full mattresses are typically better for single sleepers.

Variations on the Double or Full Mattress

Some mattress sizes have variations (think California king or twin XL mattresses), and the double/full bed is no exception. The full XL is uncommon, but its 54-inch by 80-inch footprint offers five much-needed inches of length for taller sleepers. While it’s challenging to track down mattresses, beds, and sheets in this size, the full XL is ideal for taller folks. Another variation is the “small double.” Popular in the U.K., small doubles measure 48 inches by 75 inches. This narrower version is excellent for small spaces.

Which is Right for You?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a bed: your height, a partner, pets, and any special mattress needs can all have a significant impact on your choice. However, sleepers of average height and weight are likely to prefer a double or full mattress for solo sleeping and a queen bed for sleeping with a partner. While it is possible to share a double bed with a partner, you will likely be kept in close quarters. Of course, you must consider your bedroom’s size as well. If a double mattress is too large for your room, you may have to search for a small double or a twin bed.
