What Happens When You Don’t Get Enough Sleep?

Are you not getting enough sleep at night?

Making sure that you get enough sleep at night is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle. In addition to being active and eating healthy foods, your body also needs rest to replenish the amount of energy that you spend throughout the day. To get a better picture of what is happening to your body when you don’t get enough sleep, check out how much sleep you need and the impact of a lack of sleep.

Required Sleep

The National Sleep Foundation has reported that the amount of sleep you should aim for on a nightly basis should be tailored to your age group. After two years of research, the foundation has identified nine age-specific categories. Newborns, ages 0-3 months require 14 to 17 hours of sleep. Infants from 4 to 11 months need 12 to 15 hours of sleep per day. Following them, toddlers from 1 to 2 years old need 11 to 14 hours. Preschool children ages 3 to 5 require 10 to 13 hours followed by 9 to 11 hours from school children, ages 6 to 13 years old. Following that age group, the National Sleep Foundation recommends 8 to 10 hours for teenagers, 7 to 9 hours for young adults, 7 to 9 hours for adults aged 26 to 64, and 7 to 8 hours for adults aged 65 and older. In addition to age, other environmental and behavioral factors will also help determine how much sleep you need to positively impact your body.

Not Enough Sleep

The effects of sleep deprivation range from short-term problems to long-term impact. Not only do you need enough sleep, but you need a quality mattress that also gives your body the comfort and support that it requires. To start, not getting enough sleep leads to a lack of alertness; even missing as little as 1.5 hours of sleep. It will also affect your memory, your ability to process information, and even just to think. Research has also shown a relationship between lack of sleep and stress. When you don’t get enough sleep, it can affect your mood and lead to an increase in the number of conflicts you have throughout the day. You’ll also become less likely to maintain an active lifestyle.
