How to Clean Your Mattress

When was the last time you cleaned your mattress?

When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? It’s a chore that many people forget; however, it’s one that will help you get the most from your time at rest. If you have allergies or asthma, sleeping on a clean mattress will help you breathe and sleep better. Plus, maintaining a clean mattress will help extend the overall performance life of it. Follow these steps for the best and most efficient way to clean your mattress.

Before You Clean

Before you get started on your mattress, take off your blankets and sheets, and get those in the washing machine. If you use a mattress pad on top of your mattress, wash and dry that as well. Look at the labels for special cleaning directions and be sure to follow those. Now it’s time to get started on your mattress.

Step One

Bring out your vacuum. It’s likely that your vacuum came with an upholstery attachment that you’ll use on your mattress. Star at the top and start to work your way down using a sweeping side-to-side motion. Be careful to use overlapping, narrow paths to make sure that you’ve covered the entire mattress.

Step Two

Deodorize your mattress using baking soda. Sprinkle your entire mattress with the baking soda to help remove normal body odors from sweat and a combination of oils and fragrances that you may wear. Use a scrub brush to brush the baking soda into your mattress gently. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.

Step Three

Use the upholstery attachment from your vacuum to remove the baking soda. This step will also help remove any remaining odor-causing moisture.

Step Four

If you happen to eat or drink in the bed, there may have been spills that have caused stains on your mattress.  Use hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish soap, and simple table salt. Blot the stains with a white rag but be careful never totally to saturate your mattress with any cleaning liquids.

Step Five

Flip your mattress over and repeat the process on the other side. To protect your mattress from stains, smells, dirt, and grime, use a washable mattress cover.
