How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress?

How Long a Mattress Lasts

Your mattress can provide years of great sleep – but how can you tell how long it will last?

If you’re waking up with aches and pains, or if you can’t remember when you last updated your mattress it might be time for a switch. Some mattresses can last for up to twenty years with proper care, but sometimes the manufacturer recommended date doesn’t quite live up to the reality. While there are no strict guidelines for how often your mattress should be replaced, there are a few suggestions – these combined with your own impression of the mattress should help guide you on your way.

Innerspring Mattress

Depending on the quality of mattress you might be able to get up to fifteen years of usage out of an innerspring mattress, but the average life cycle is about seven to ten years. A higher quality mattress will be made with better materials and will be able to last for longer than others. Innerspring mattresses are also able to be flipped over, doing so regularly can help add to the number of years you will be able to use it.

Foam Mattress

Foam mattresses vary significantly, which means that setting specific guidelines for their potential lasting times is difficult. In general, a good memory foam mattress can last anywhere from ten to fifteen years, while some brands offer warranties for up to twenty years. A foam mattress doesn’t need to be flipped, but rotating it can help to change up where depressions occur.

Hybrid Mattress

As a new variety of mattress, there isn’t enough research yet to show how long this type of mattress might last but it is thought that the lifespan will be similar to, or slightly longer than, innerspring mattresses. Hybrid mattresses use a combination of foam, latex, gell, and padding over inner coils, making the potential lifespan somewhere between the two.

Signs Of Wear

Regardless of how long your mattress is supposed to last there are always times when things go wrong. Keep an eye out for unusual wear and tear and overall comfort. If you’re waking up sore and tired there’s a good chance it’s time to upgrade. You should also keep an eye out for any sagging, noticeable lumps, or unusual sounds from the springs. If you suffer from allergies, it may benefit you to replace your mattress more frequently if you haven’t been using mattress covers.
