Pillow Top Mattress vs. Euro Top: Which Should You Choose?

Pillow Top Mattress vs. Euro Top: Which Should You Choose?

Choosing between a Euro top and pillow top mattress can be a difficult process. Here are some key points to consider.

On the long list of hard adult decisions, choosing a mattress usually doesn’t rank very highly for most people. It is a super important decision, however. Having the wrong bed can mean not getting a good night’s sleep, which can have heaps of consequences down the line, from trouble losing weight and increased chance of illness to (of course) crankiness and drowsiness during the day. So, while you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of the mattress options (innerspring, memory foam, adjustable, etc.), add the choice between a Euro top and pillow top mattress. Which one is better?

What Is A Euro Top?

A Euro top mattress is essentially a specialized pillow top. This type of mattress still has a cushion layer like a regular pillow top. The cushion layer is stitched under the mattress cover in a Euro top, so it is less likely to bunch or move, and it tends to be a denser, more sturdy material. The visual result is a cleaner look, more like a standard mattress, but without sacrificing the pillow top comfort.

What Is A Pillow Top?

A pillow top mattress is a type of bed that has an additional cushion layer on top of the mattress material. In a standard pillow top, this extra layer is stitched on outside of the mattress cover. This layer can be made of various materials, including foam, fiber, wool, and gel. The cushion layer provides contouring and support, especially for people with back pain.

Pros and Cons of Both

Pillow tops are available on any type of mattress, but they are most common on inner springs. Adding a pillow top doesn’t change the firmness of your bed (and they come on all firmness levels), but it does help to simulate the effect of a hybrid mattress without the increased cost. Pillow tops also help decrease the feeling of motion transfer, especially when added to a memory foam mattress. Pillow tops are not without their negatives as well. They are more likely to hold heat if they’re made of certain materials like foam. If the padding material is inferior, you’re also more likely to notice sagging. Finally, all that padding adds up to inches in mattress height, and you may find you have to buy special bedding that’s deeper.
