Last week we talked about shopping for mattresses online. Assuming you’ve taken that advice, you decided on one, purchased it, and now are waiting for it to arrive. But a mattress is no small fry package, and it definitely will not be fitting inside the mailbox. More than likely, you will need to have someone at home to receive the very large delivery. But there are a couple of other measures you’ll need to take during the days between purchase and delivery. Here’s what to do while you are waiting on your mattress in the mail.
Decide on Manner of Shipment
Sleepwell has a number of physical store providers that stock our high-quality mattresses on the East Coast. Most provide customers with the option to pick up the mattress from their store for free, as long as you have appropriate transportation that can pick up the mattress. If you don’t have a Sleepwell mattress provider in your area, we give you the option to ship the it through the mail directly to your home for a fee. This way, you won’t have to worry about needing a large enough vehicle to haul the mattress home.
The next thing to do is to rearrange your house a bit, not only to prepare for the incoming mattress but also to remove the current one. If your home has stairs and the mattress will be located on the second level, make sure to keep the area surrounding the stairs clear of any potential blockages. You’ll also want to make a path from the front door (or whichever door the mattress will be brought inside through) to the destination room. This includes removing or moving any furniture, removing fragile or breakable items, or anything that might prevent the safe movement of it from the door to your bed frame.
Remove the Old Mattress
The last step is to liquidate your old mattress. You likely won’t want to do this until the specified delivery day since you’ll need somewhere to sleep in the meantime. You’ll likely need to have two people since lifting a mattress is no easy task. Carefully lift up the mattress from both ends and flip it onto its horizontal side. Then, you’ll want to carry it towards the exit door very carefully after clearing a path. You’ll also want to look up proper local disposing methods for mattresses since they vary by location.
