If you have ever woken up drenched in sweat or, better yet, been totally unable to fall asleep because you were just too hot, grab your innerspring mattress and follow these three tips to help you get your 40 winks this summer.

Summer is nice and all, but trying to sleep anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic with this hot and muggy weather can be impossible. Have you ever opened your windows, taken the blankets off of your bed, and still been too hot and sweaty to sleep? You are not alone. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to make summertime sleeping more comfortable, starting with using an innerspring mattress. If you have ever woken up drenched in sweat or, better yet, been totally unable to fall asleep because you were just too hot, grab your innerspring mattress and follow these three tips to help you get your 40 winks this summer.

1. Use an Innerspring Mattress and Box Spring

Getting a good night’s sleep is important, and the first step to sleeping cool in the summer is to use an innerspring mattress. All mattresses have their pros and cons, but sleeping cool is where innerspring mattresses really excel. The superior air circulation provided by the springs inside means that body heat is not as easily trapped inside the mattress and you sleep cooler.

If you currently sleep with your mattress on a solid base or the floor, it could be making your mattress seem warmer. Using a box spring or a base with slats increases air circulation, cooling your mattress (and you) down.

2. Pay Attention to Fabrics

Using cotton, bamboo, or other natural fabrics for bedding and pajamas can help wick away moisture and allow for increased airflow, cooling your body down. Another option is to put a wool mattress pad or cooling foam topper on your bed. Wool is breathable and wicks away moisture, but foam is a bit trickier. While many people laud memory foam mattresses, not all foams are created equal when it comes to cooling. Make sure to do your research and get a foam topper that is designed to cool.

3. Sleep Alone

Yes, really. Cuddling is nice, but not when it is 90 degrees outside and your partner is a human furnace. If you are trying to sleep in warm weather, put the snuggling on hold and try to put as much space as possible between you and your partner. This increases air circulation and allows sweat to serve its function through evaporative cooling. The more space you have to yourself on your innerspring mattress, the better. Maybe it’s time for that upgrade to a California King?
